A little while back, the New York Times published a report on sodium intake that caught our eye. The headline: "No Benefit Seen in Sharp Limits on Salt in Diet."
Here's how the piece opened:
In a report that undercuts years of public health warnings, a prestigious group convened by the government says there is no good reason based on health outcomes for many Americans to drive their sodium consumption down to the very low levels recommended in national dietary guidelines.
The New York Times
A couple of things worth noting. If your doctor has asked you to watch your sodium, watch your sodium. The report isn't saying to throw out the guidance, it's saying the very lowest targets may not be doing what we thought they were for most people. Which, honestly, tracks. Salt is a mineral our bodies need. Too little is a problem, too much is a problem, and the middle has always been where the answer is.
Worth a read.
